It’s that time of year again! Please support us by voting for our SXSW 2020 workshop proposals.

This year we’re offering ideas across the board, including creating Alexa applications, building with SwiftUI for iOS, using game engines for more engaging UI, and participating in a SXSW 2020 retrospective.

Is there an Echo in here? ++
This is a workshop where non-developers can learn about voice applications and actually build one under our guidance. We’ll discuss best practices for designing Voice User Interfaces (VUI) and go through all the steps of building your own Alexa Skill. Everyone will leave our workshop with a working Alexa Skill for Amazon’s voice platform and a better understanding of how to design conversational UI.

Organizers: Tom Hudson, Edgar Rios, Stephanie Embry

Swift UI for You and I ++
Apple recently introduced SwiftUI, an extremely innovative and simple way for iOS developers to quickly adapt standard iOS controls in their applications. But what exactly does this mean for you and your applications? This workshop will walk you through starting out in SwiftUI, including important features and limitations to consider. Participants will bring their own computer with Xcode installed, and will be invited to participate in learning SwiftUI using a set of basic examples.

Organizer: Marc J Vandehey

Juicy Design: What Game Engines Teach Us about UI ++
Video games offer visceral ways of presenting content: features like real-time physics, particle effects, and surface materials help “sell” an experience and engage users in ways traditional UI rarely explores. First, we’ll learn about designing UI to be “juicy,” a term game designers use to mean “lush with satisfying user feedback.” We’ll cover the do’s and don’ts of “juicy UI,” and train you to recognize opportunities for it. Then we’ll use Unity, a free game engine, to play with downloadable, hands-on examples, including: sprites, projected menus, and other effects.

Organizer: Max Wade

Retrospectives for Digital: Doing the Right Thing ++
This session is designed to be an introduction to the concept, methods, and value of retrospectives. Whether it’s a sprint retrospective or a project retrospective, looking back is always important before one can successfully move on. To bring this concept to life, participants will actively participate in a SXSW Conference Experience retrospective with fellow conference attendees. The goal is to capture the good, the not-so-good, and the what-could-be for the conference itself. Moderators will synthesize the feedback gathered as a digital deliverable for SXSW.

Organizers: Lani DeGuire, Tom Hudson
